The Indiana State city of Shelbyville, with a population bordering 20,000, is located in Addison Township and is the county seat of Shelby County. The earliest records indicate that the region was inhabited by the Miami tribe in 1818 until Jacob Whetzel arrived in the area. A town began to develop and was named after Isaac Shelby, the first Governor of Kentucky, with the town incorporated on 21st January 1850. The city has its own racecourse, the Indiana Grand, along with a racino and casino, which held its inaugural meeting on 13th March 2009. The 8 furlong oval dirt track, with inner 7 furlong turf course and separate 6 furlong and 10 furlong chutes, sharing a 302 metre home straight was previously known as Indiana Downs. The track offers both thoroughbred and quarter horse races, with the feature thoroughbred races being the Indiana Derby and Oaks, both inherited from Hoosier Park, the Indiana Grand and Futurity, while the principal quarter horse races include the Blue River Derby Stakes final and the QHRAI Derby final.
